In the early years of the imperium many artificers experiments with combining different types of weapons (combi-weapons), although powerful in their flexibility they were often unreliable. A double (twinlinked) Boltgun was a favored combination, so after the horus herasy the techadepts of the imperium set about developing a more reliable version, that eventual came to be known as the StormBolter. Due to it's great weight, sophisticated design and doubled recoil it did not replace the standard boltgun for rank and file troops, but did become a choice selection for elite imperial officers and the Terminator space marines.
The Powerfist combines weighty, thick armour, with pneumatic rams, artificial muscle fibres (as used in power armor) and rending forcefield generators (common to all power weapons) into a gauntlet of awesome destruction. It's great weight and interia makes it slow to wield, even for powerful Terminator space marines. Punches delivered with a power fist, crack armour and bone with ease, even the carapace of a Carnifex cannot hold up to it's power for long.
