Sniper rifles (named after the fast moving snipe birds of ancient terra) are the weapons used by scouts who specialize in markesmanship.
Shot for shot more powerful than the standard spacemarine boltgun and requied with a magnifying optical scope to pick out weak points in enemy armour.
Tactics
Find a high spot, preferably with cover, scope up with the secondary attack key, select high value targets and eliminate them. Use headshots against Chaos filth for maximum damage. While scoped your movment will be very limited, so don't get too far from cover.
